FAQs
Know what to ask in the ICU.
INSPIRE CCM answers common questions about Critical Care Medicine, intensivists, and why coordinated ICU care matters.

Critical Care Medicine, also known as Intensive Care Medicine, is a
sub-specialty of medicine that provides the highest standard of care for critically ill
patients who require admission to an Intensive Care Unit due to a potentially
life-threatening condition.
An intensivist is a physician who specializes in Critical Care Medicine
and has extensive training to competently care for critically ill patients in the ICU.
Critical Care physicians are experts who know how to provide the highest standard of care for the ICU patient. Many studies have shown that an intensivist-led multi-disciplinary team approach in the delivery of care to a critically ill patient in the ICU achieves the best result possible for the patient. Additionally, any delay in receiving live saving treatment after a patient gets admitted to the Intensive Care Unit is associated with an increased chance of death. Time is of the essence. The presence of an Intensivist led team at the patient’s bedside to provide the standard of care as soon as a patient’s condition becomes critical maximizes the chance of full recovery.
Critical care physicians are trained to provide the ICU standard of
care. Intensivist-led multidisciplinary teams can improve outcomes because immediate,
coordinated treatment matters when time is of the essence.
Ask who is leading the ICU care plan, how the team is coordinating
across specialties, what changes are expected in the next 24 hours, and how comfort,
communication, and goals of care are being addressed.
